Why are We Here, Anyway?

Lowering Setting Expectations

I thought I’d write down the vision for the Afternoon Farmer site, so you all have a good idea what to expect when you come here. Unfortunately, I have no idea what the vision is. Maybe we’ll work it out by the end of this post.

These are topics that will appear, maybe:

  • Religion

We’re Christians, as I mentioned in the About page

I’ll post topics that I find interesting, maybe musings on a sermon at church, or posts about general religious topics that interest me: why religious adherence is fading in the West, observations about my own branch of Reformed Confessional Protestantism, etc.

  • Politics

I do my best to avoid thinking about politics in the usual way, so expect unconventional political posts. I’ll do my level best to avoid posts that unnecessarily fan partisan flames, but if I think it needs to be done I will not hold back. However, I’ll probably not do many issues-based posts, but more observations on how we do politics in America. And jokes. Political jokes will have to be made.

  • Fitness

Our easy lifestyle makes modern humans weak. I lift weights to ward off th atrophy and so should you, lest you find yourself unable to get off the toilet one day. I used to be a runner, and that was cool too. I hate fitness fads. Work hard, see the results.

  • Life

I don’t know, we’ll just write about stuff that’s going on, priorities, house projects, etc.

  • Hobbies

I love hobbies. I have and have had way too many. I gave one up a year or two ago: roasting my own coffee. Others I only get to do infrequently (hiking, fishing), and some are on the "man I wish I had time for that" list (hunting, rock climbing). We play a lot of sports with the kids and they do little league as well as homeschool soccer and basketball. I coach a lego robotics team that two of my kids are on. They also have their own interests, and those topics might appear here, too (maybe even written by them).

  • Homeschooling

Successes, failures, philosophies, etc. If the Farmer himself posts here it’ll be high level stuff. The Farmer’s Wife will handle the details, since this is her purview.

  • Stories

Sometimes you gotta write something down. Sometimes it’s about real events, sometimes it’s fictional. This is our platform.

  • Uncategorized things

    For other stuff. Poetry?

We probably won’t post real often, so it’s a good idea to subscribe to the blog instead of relying on yourself to come back here on your own.

In summary, the Afternoon Farmer is a forest track, dappled in sunlight filtered through the canopy. It’s winding and breezy, and you want to enter and take a stroll.
